I was a lost boy
Back in 1987 I was a senior in high school and Jon Bon Jovi looked a lot like me. I was lost and seeking a place to belong. Weren’t we all. There was this movie with Keifer Sutherland called The Lost Boys. A great dark thriller vampire movie. A movie about a great reality in our presence. The fringe of society where youth seek a place of belonging. I was already confirmed and catechized by this time but I felt more connected to the vampires than I did anything Catholic. My lifestyle reflected that belief. I wasn’t against God, I just didn’t belong with churchy people. Honestly, I still feel like that at times. The movie and my life have a spiritual ending but you will first have to see past the story and the initial appearance. Why are we like that?
In our strangest moments when people are strange, instead of our knee jerk reaction to judgment, why don’t we instead ask, “Where is Jesus in this?” It is a valid question, because there isn’t a place that Jesus isn’t present. Well off course, except that place in our mind full of judgement.
Seriously, how many more children have to die of abuse? How many more children need to be left feral to fend against a feral society? How much longer do we sit silent to children caught in the belief that I once was stuck in? Or are we ignorant to the news of absentee parents and ineffective protection systems. Or do we just not really care about others? Seriously, sit with this for a while with Jesus on the Cross. No more excuses. We are not helpless, we just act like it.
I used to be lost, now I’m just on the verge of anger and resentment, yet hopeful that there is a happy ending. It is faith in Jesus Christ and saintly souls living out their faith instead of sticking their heads in the sand. I obviously still judge.
When enough is enough and you would like to talk about what’s next just hit me up. Until then. Shalom. Let's unpack this movie ending sometime and how we chose to respond.
