Fifth Sunday of Easter
Acts 6:1-7, Ps.33:1-19, 1 Peter 2:4-9, John 14:1-12
How many of us have watched a crime fighting movie or television show? There is always the investigator looking for clues and asking questions. It’s always a search for the suspect and the accomplices. Somehow and someway through a series of conversation and interrogations there always is the question, “Do you know him (her)? Before the question though there are clues. The person being asked is somehow linked to knowing the suspect. Some behavior, some connection, or some question of association. The person being questioned can answer with words, but evidence can be undeniable. That is always the “gotcha” scene. Evidence of undeniable association. They know the suspect. Not just know of them, but there is a relationship. A close relationship. It took an investigation and intense questioning to get to the point, but yes indeed the questioned knows the suspect. The relationship was hidden and denied. Guilty. Guilty of knowing the suspect.
If Jesus was the suspect, would we be guilty of knowing Him? Would it take intense investigation and questioning? Is knowing Jesus hidden and denied? That would be surprising knowing you are here at this moment. I have to believe that you do not hide or deny knowing Jesus. My question, to you and me, is how well do I know Him? Of course we know of Jesus, but do we know Him? Do we know Him in such a deep and profound way that our life will never be the same? Do we know Him such that He lives in us? Do we know Him such that His light shines radiantly upon others? Do we know Him such that people just look at us and ask about Him? Maybe. Maybe on our good days. On the days that we are living in God’s will and in God’s very presence. Indeed then if are truly in Him and Him in us, no investigation is needed. It is self evident. God is living within and radiating from within us. We are His. We know Him so much that others see Him in us.
It is then when we have become living stones built into a spiritual house magnifying our royal priesthood in our sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. A holy nation, a people of his own, that announces His praises. We have been called out of darkness into His wonderful light.
No one should ever have to ask us if we know Him. They should see Him in us. The way, the truth, and the life is all the evidence needed to convict us.
